Volunteer Planting Day.

Saturday April 14th, 2007

9 a.m. to 12 noon.

We NEED YOU and your friends and your family and your co-workers…we need all of you even if it’s just for the one day!

Meet at the Rose Garden Gazebo. Bring your gardening gloves, hand tools, and a shovel if you have one.

Volunteer Planting Day is open to anyone who wishes to become a volunteer gardener in Elizabeth Park.  Volunteers may choose to help for this one day only by planting rose bushes or sign up to adopt a rose bed or become a general weeder for the Rose Garden.  Volunteers are also needed to sign up for the Rock / Shade Garden, the Perennial Garden, Tulip Garden and Annual Garden.  This is also a great time to volunteer your administrative services to the Information Center in the park or sign up to volunteer for special events.  For more information, please call the Friends of Elizabeth Park at 860-231-9443. We need you!

If it rains, give us a call for the rain date 860-231-9443.

We need garden tools for the volunteers to use -  Looking for hoes, small shovels, pruning equipment, weeders.  If people are retiring or moving and want to get rid of these tools the Friends would like to have them

Don’t have extra tools, but have an extra air conditioner?

We are also looking for someone to donate an Air Conditioner for the information center office.

                              Another Day in the Park…

                                                                           with David Wilson

                                                           Friends of Elizabeth Park Director

Spring is HERE! And summer is right around the corner.

The spring flower show presented by the City of Hartford maintenance employees looked great in spite of the strange weather and mild winter.  The Friends of Elizabeth Park raised over $5,000 for the care and maintenance of the park from the Spring Flower Sale.  We’d like to thank everybody who came and purchased the flowers and to our helpful volunteers.

Did you know that 11,000 tulip bulbs were planted in the spring gardens?  The bulbs were purchased by the Friends of the Park from donations and fundraising.

That was just the beginning of spring.

We would really like to kick off spring with an army of volunteers.

We need volunteers to adopt-a-bed in the rose garden,

become a general weeder,

work in the Perennial Garden,

work in the Annual Garden,

work in the Rock/shade garden and

work in the Tulip Garden.

We need a “librarian” type of volunteer to help organize our reference library at the Information Center.

Be a tour guide.

We need folks to volunteer at the Summer Concert Series and Rose Weekend

and to top all that off we really need volunteers to recruit more volunteers

and the biggest commitment of all…someone to organize the volunteer program.

However, volunteerism is not something to get involved in on a whim.

Only folks who are serious about volunteering should sign up.

It is not for the half-hearted interest.

The Friends of Elizabeth Park have a database of hundreds of volunteers.  In reality, only a small percentage of those volunteers are active.  We have been diligently working to get an accurate count of our volunteers and just how many hours our volunteers work.  This is important as it could impact whether or not the City of Hartford hires new employees for Hartford Parks.

So please, ask yourself with all honesty if volunteering in Elizabeth Park is for you.  If at some point you realize that you don’t have time to volunteer in Elizabeth Park, please ask to be removed from our database.                               Top

Elizabeth Park will continue to offer Full Moon Tours and Park Heritage Tours this summer.

With the growing popularity of these tours, more volunteer docents are needed to help give the tours.

The Friends of Elizabeth Park gardeners and committee members will train you.

Wanted: Volunteer Tour Guides

If you are personable comfortable with public speaking, love history and gardens, or just happen to have personal knowledge of Elizabeth Park we welcome you to inquire at elizabeth_park@sbcglobal.net or call 860-231-9443.

It’s fun!

2:30 - 6:30 pm

Pond House

There will be over two thousand dahlia roots representing most of the show winning varieties. This is a great opportunity to pick up large numbers of tubers at very reasonable prices.

Dahlia roots will be sold both from bins at 10 roots for $20 and in a root auction for many of the hard to get varieties. The bins were emptied last year in about a half an hour so it is important to arrive promptly to take advantage of this bargain.

ARTIST STATEMENT

I have always been fascinated by balance and tension in design. Jewelry gave me an opportunity to design minimal elements for effect. When I moved to painting I did so because I was not good at it, and loved what painters could do beyond design, composition and color, to move people in really profound ways.

At this point my imagination is caught by Hartford and the changes that bring its past and present into balance. Murals, print, and folding screens, are the Art forms that this interest is taking.
