Damage to Elizabeth Park after the October storm

Dear Friends of Elizabeth Park,

Less than four weeks into my new job as executive director of the Friends of Elizabeth Park, the storm of the century did tremendous damage to the park and refocused one of the priorities of our group for 2012. Our first priority – the Rose Garden- had 8 signature rose arches damaged after 107 years of service. New red cedar posts and iron arches need to be fabricated and up by April of 2012 for the Rose season and our signature annual event “Rose Weekend” which is June 22-25.

We need $35,000 to replace the broken arches

The Ethel Donaghue Foundation and the City of Hartford have each pledged $12,500 to match donations towards this goal.

Please consider a gift to the Friends with your year-end giving.

I am confident that our friends, neighbors and rose lovers will help us meet this very important fundraising goal.

For 2012, I look forward to working with our community, city, and corporate leaders to forge relationships that will support the mission of the Friends group to steward the legacy of the park for the benefit of the public.

The board of the Friends and I would like to thank our volunteers, donors and supporters who have assisted us with keeping the rose garden a premiere heritage location for visitors to Connecticut as well as a wonderful sanctuary for the surrounding neighborhoods  & communities that use the park often.

Wishing you a wonderful holiday season and happy New Year.

Karen Tomasko
Executive Director
